![]() ![]() ![]() The Haleakala National Park is a place to see. It reminds me of some of the sties that one might see on the moon. Sometime it is used for training for work on the moon. On the hill behind there is an observatory to watch the stars. See the colors now I hear but didn't see the sunrise over the park is a magnificent site. In the background the volcano of Mouna Kea and Mouna Loa can be seen. Mouna Loa is still considered active as it has erupted for 22 days in 1984. Mouna Loa is 2 miles higher than Kilaua. But the Mouna Kea is considered extinct . Mauna Kea is 13,796 feet high, it is not an explosive kind of volcano. The Haleakala creater is 3000 feet deep and 7.5 miles long. It is also 2.5 miles wide with a curcumference of 21 miles. There are 9 cinder cones on the bottom of the crater which are 600 to 1000 feet tall. Haleakala takes up about 1/2 of Maui. There are trails that wind around the crater that is about 30 miles worth. The last lava flow was about 870 years ago. Haleakala is the largest dormant volcano in the world. |
