Waikiki, one of the most well known beaches of the world, is recognized most for its relaxing environment and beautiful beaches. Waikiki was strictly utilized by Hawaiian royalty in the 1800's as a retreat for relaxation. In Hawaiian, the word Waikiki means 'spouting water'. Therefore, the beach's name derived from its natural springs and streams the fed its wetlands. These wetlands separated Waikiki from its interior. In the early 1900's a lot of these wetlands were drained and many resorts were erected. Some of the most popular high-rise resort hotels along the beach are Hilton Hawaiian Village, Halekulani Hotel and Hyatt Regency Waikiki. Some of the historic resorts built in the early 1900's are the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and Moana Surfrider Hotel. These hotel offer fine dining, shows and a spectacular view of Diamond Head, which is an extinct volcanic crater. There are many activities for the adventurous, including surfing, back packing to an active volcano, or even visiting a royal palace. In 2001, a 30 foot screen was erected on part of the beach called Queen's Way. On the weekends, they screen free movies for visitors to enjoy. A couple of hours before each show, bands play to the crowds on a stage in front of the screen. Another point of interest in a historic walking trail that tells the history of the area using bronze trail markers in the shape of surf boards. Parts of the trail leads hikers to Kuhio Beach where a statue of Princess Kaiulani is placed, then on to Queen Liliuokalani's home, King Lunalilo's home, Kawehewehe's Healing waters and wizard's stone, to mention a few. This trail enhances awareness of Waikiki, both as a huge part of Hawaii's history and a sacred place. |
