It has been almost 2,000 years since the first Polynesian canoe touched the shores of the Hawaiian Islands. As their eyes rose upwards to view the majestic mountains and beautifully lush landscape, they knew they were home. They began their lives anew amongst these tiny islands in the vast ocean and it proved to be a good life. 2,000 years later, Hawaii is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. The Polynesians are now Hawaiian Natives and their life style has changed dramatically, but mostly for the better. They still canoe quietly between islands and their culture remains as alive today as it was all those years ago. The wonderful thing about that is, people from all over the world can take part in and experience this life, even if only for a few days. You should plan to visit these islands with Native guides, not through a travel agency. If you want your trip to truly be memorable, you should plan to take a canoe trip or two to go from island to island. This is truly the only way to do it, as you will experience first hand what the Natives experienced when first arriving. The best part is we now have cameras that will memorialize these moments, freezing them in time so you can revisit when ever you wish. Hawaii has a very water centric atmosphere and you would be missing out on virtually everything that is holy about this area if you neglected to take advantage of the many water-based activities that are offered. Again, always go with a Native guide and ask to see the islands through their eyes. Take pictures at every opportunity and you will have enough pictures to make several "Hawaiian Vacation" scrapbooks. |
